Turning the Page: Reading as a Bridge to Independence
For adults with cognitive disabilities, difficulty reading is rarely just an academic problem. It shapes whether a person can read their own mail, understand a medication label, complete a form, or make daily decisions without someone at their side. Depending on others for everyday tasks erodes confidence and contributes to anxiety, depression, and isolation.
Turning the Page: Reading as a Bridge to Independence will provide individualized reading instruction to adults with cognitive disabilities who live with a beginning literacy level, targeting the specific skills each learner is missing rather than a one-size-fits-all course. Instruction is integrated with therapy; each participant sets personal independence goals with their therapist, and every lesson serves those goals, so new skills translate into greater independence and less isolation. We measure success individually through progress on those goals and benchmark assessments.
We will begin with two current clients whose mental health is affected by barriers to reading. Adults in this situation have typically aged out of school-based services, and options in Helena are limited to programs designed for English language learners. This is a true gap, and we expect demand to grow as partner agencies learn this resource exists.
Turning the Page is built on expertise already inside Keystone. Executive Director Chris Noel previously worked as a national trainer for BetterLesson, delivering professional development on behalf of EL Education and OpenUp Resources to hundreds of teachers and dozens of district leaders. She will train and support instructors, including practicum students Ravyn Scott, who brings a speech-language pathology background, and Gabrielle Wheeler, who has taught in Head Start. Our existing Carroll College internship partnership can expand to include elementary education majors as the program grows.
